about
this sketch is inspired by a journey on the night train from Paris to Latour-de-Carol-Enveitg. As I lay in my couchette with my back to the direction of travel—the train rocking, rattling and squealing its way south—I thought of Walter Benjamin's text on Paul Klee's print, 'Angelus Novus'. Benjamin writes of the angel of history being dragged backwards into the future by a violent storm, the debris of history piling up before him … "This storm is what we call progress," Benjamin declares.
Benjamin's full Angelus Novus text can be found in his 'Theses on the Concept of History'.
